I’ve always found it amusing that Christians like this quote, because it can be interpreted in several ways that are not at all flattering to Christianity.
For instance, even if it were true that there are no atheists in foxholes, (which it isn’t), all this does is suggest that belief in God stems from anxiety about our own mortality. This actually supports the popular atheist position that religious belief is based on unconscious fears and desires.
Another possible interpretation is that there are no atheists in foxholes because atheists aren’t as violent and warlike as religious believers. Or that there are no atheists in foxholes because atheists are courageously fighting on the battlefield instead of cowering in the trenches.
If anything, this should be a popular quote among atheists, not Christians.
